PATHOS Penpal Project

Deutsch-Amerikanischer Briefaustausch zwischen Antigone Akgün (DE) und John L. Peacock (USA)

Im Rahmen der Reihe «King Kong und die weissen Frauen»

Hey Jon,

long time no see. Too many were the projects I was involved in, which then happened uneventfully: Premieres in front of empty auditoriums, releases without publicity. Just me, my computer and some sparkling wine in the freezer. When I see how hard the third wave of the pandemic is hitting Germany, and especially countries that are not so privileged, I ask myself if it’s not cynical to produce art excessively in these times. On the other hand, this is our profession, we do good for ourselves – or we disappoint ourselves when we overproduce, in the spirit of capitalism, where not even a small production is possible. And then we cavort on sites, forums and portals, looking wide-eyed: „Please, please, watch my stream, I made a project, so did you, so did they, let’s just hang out and stream in the digital world.“ That‘ s cool, those who sense a new perspective for the performing arts in the digital world say, but with all good will … there’s a lot missing. Sharing the joy, the performance, the ecstasy is missing. So, for the past few weeks, after being insanely stressed rushing back and forth from appointments, I’ve been sitting on my single premieres, raising a glass to myself and smirking that at least a few friends offered me congratulations on not premiering.
It looks like it will continue that way. Today I checked the news on TV for the first time: there is a lot of talk about relaxation for vaccinated people, at the same time people are competing for the vaccine – but the perspective of the next weeks is at least still to hold on and to wait.
So that’s what I’m doing, too, and I’m glad that at least I have the perspective of getting vaccinated in the next few weeks. In general, however, I am also aware of the insanely privileged situation in which I live and yet I hope to soon meet again people analog – in the end, as corny as it sounds, it is the small moments that make happy.
Excited to see what news I can have in the next letter for you and, as always, very much looking forward to your next letter!

Best,

Antigone
