Happy New Year! What a year it has already been for my country. I am not going to be so arrogant as to believe you’ve been glued to your news outlets and that they have been showing the past week’s American political drama 24 hours a day (as they I have and the news out here has been doing), nor will I be so naïve as to believe you’ve blissfully been completely unaware of what’s been happening out here, so I’ll just say, shit has hit the fan.
The siege of our US capital was, to many “intellectuals” in my circles, unsurprising but still very startling. The allowance of them to enter the Capitol building, guns in hand, some with military training and an intent to use it, blew my mind. The swift condemnation (by many in the government) of these domestic terrorists was a hopeful reaction, but the insistence that the President did no wrong (by him and his loyalists) terrifies me. The threat of retaliation by these loyalists for not getting what they wanted last week, January 6th, terrifies me. The fact that our FBI has said there will be organized, armed protests in all US state capitals (along with Washington DC…again…) during Joe Biden’s inauguration terrifies me.
But I do have hope. Today our House of Representatives should vote to impeach him…again…and this time it will have bipartisan support. Perhaps the Senate may actually join the House this time? Some form of justice for the heinous acts against his own country should come to this man, though I am sure it will be much less than we want, or he deserves.
So, I wait. I wait for the conclusion of the second impeachment. I wait for the inauguration of our new President. I wait to find out what our current President’s loyalists will actually do when he is no longer in power. I wait to see if “some sense of normalcy” will actually return to this nation. I wait to see if our vaccines will work towards herd immunity (oh yeah, we’re still being pummeled by the pandemic), and to see if my life as a theater artist will be able to move forward in 2021. 2022? Ever? I wait, and I hope.
Be Well. Here’s to a new year.
